Like many of you, I have attended my fair share of workshops. More often than not, I leave disappointed.
Why?
the tutor is not organised
there is not enough material and/or equipment
the tutor gets tied up with a 'noisy' participant
there are too many participants
there is not enough time to complete the item
the tutor isn't knowledgeable
it isn't value for money
just because you're good at something doesn't mean you should teach!
And I'm sure you can come up with a lot more reasons as to why you have left disappointed.
So what does a good workshop consist of?
an interesting topic and a knowledgeable tutor
safe and inclusive environment
clear instruction on what's included and how to get there
clear rules about attending, cancellations, mobile 'phones etc.
appropriate facilities, equipment and materials
minimum and maximum numbers (that allows you to if the workshop is suitable for you)
an explanation about how the workshop is going to be conducted. This helps manage expectations
a demonstration with lots of explanations, including safety requirements
allowances for different learning styles and paces
lots of guidance and encouragement, with each participant getting individual attention
most importantly, a quality outcome and experience
Again, I'm sure you can add more to this.
In summary, do a little bit of research before booking into a workshop. Where is it located; how many participants; is the tutor knowledgeable and experienced. Word of mouth is invaluable.
Let me know what you think.
